Māhuhu Ki Te Rangi is an educational resource that tells authentic stories of Ngāti Whātua in an innovative way.
The app captures and shares the stories of ancestral waka as told by the descendants of the original voyagers, using engaging narration, illustration and interactivity.
The objective of this resource is to ensure that all tamariki grow up understanding their whakapapa and hence their connection with te whenua.
Interactivity has been used to create an immersive digital experience with an original, image-rich narrative. Features include:
• Narration in te reo Māori synchronised with text.
• Swipe to Read.
• Tap to Spell phonetically.
• Read aloud function.
• A record yourself function that enables readers to record their own or whānau narration, overlay it in the app, and share.
Māhuhu Ki Te Rangi was developed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua, a body corporate established under the “Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua Act 1988". The Rūnanga is the sole representative body and authorised voice to deal with issues affecting the whole of Ngāti Whātua. The Rūnanga strategies are collectively called “Ngāti Whātua Heru Hāpai”– “Grow forth and never give in”:
- Manaakitanga. The health and wellbeing of uri and others within the rohe of Ngāti Whātua.
- Kaitiakitanga. Guardianship over Ngāti Whātua land, air and sea.
- Mana Ngāti Whātua. The Rūnanga has an obligation to enhance the prestige and mana of Ngāti Whātua through Tino Rangatiratanga and Marae and Cultural Development.
